Feb 2, 2018 — NTSOC announced today that it is the recipient of a $30,000 grant for an in-home respite program through Easter Seals Colorado and the Colorado Respite Coalition. NTSOC will provide a minimum of 1,500 hours of respite care to 75 families during the grant period, averaging 20 hours per family. By May 17, 2019, the completion of this grant will provide respite hours to families in the Pueblo, El Paso, and Teller communities.
“NTSOC is a non-profit company serving the needs of special needs children and young adults in southern Colorado. I applied for this grant as we have identified pockets of families providing care for their children who need some time to recharge who do not otherwise qualify for respite services through Medicaid,” said Lisa Davis, CEO of NTSOC. Davis conducted a needs assessment in 2017 of the company’s families, and the data showed respite to be one of the primary unmet needs of our service population. “We aim to reduce the stress experienced by special needs families, and through this grant program, we will quantifiably measure the result of respite and stress reduction.”
Priority for grant recipients goes to families who do not receive respite through Medicaid, do not receive Certified Nurse Aide hours through Medicaid, and have financial limitations. Respite gives caregivers a break so they can take the time to do whatever they feel would decrease their stress and rejuvenate them to continue to provide care to their loved one. This time could be used for socializing with friends, exercising, attending family events, working on crafts and hobbies, reading a book, or shop for groceries and clothing.
NTSOC has retained a pool of qualified respite providers. If a qualifying family requests their own provider, he or she needs to complete an orientation including a fingerprint-based background check before providing care.
